Wallet resilience

What if your hardware-wallet company closes?

By Jolly Ledger editorial · Published · Reviewed · 4 min read

Short answer

A manufacturer closing does not by itself remove assets recorded on a blockchain. Continued access depends on your keys, backup compatibility, wallet configuration and available software—not simply on the company remaining open.

A hardware-wallet company supplies equipment, software and support. It does not normally hold the assets controlled by an ordinary self-custody wallet. Its closure can still create practical difficulties: an app may stop connecting, replacement parts may disappear, and reliable recovery guidance may become harder to find.

Separate the blockchain from the service

The blockchain’s records do not disappear because a device manufacturer stops trading. A working device may remain able to sign transactions with compatible software. However, an application may depend on servers for balances, account discovery or broadcasting transactions. The device working and the usual app working are related but different questions.

Open-source code can help others maintain tools, but it is not a promise that someone will do so. Building software, verifying releases and supporting unusual assets may require expertise. Treat continued maintenance as something to verify, not an automatic benefit implied by a product label.

Know what your backup actually describes

BIP-39 specifies a mnemonic-to-seed process used by many wallets. That shared standard can support recovery across products, but it does not require every product to support every asset or account arrangement. A compatible recovery also needs the correct passphrase, where used, and suitable account derivation settings.

SLIP-0039 describes a different backup scheme with its own share structure and recovery requirements. Do not assume a device accepting a certain word count accepts your backup standard. Record the format explicitly; backup length and format are not interchangeable descriptions.

Preserve useful records, not a pile of downloads

Keep non-secret setup records while reliable information is available: device model, backup standard, asset networks, account types and official documentation references. For multisig, wallet configuration such as descriptors or the documented equivalent may also matter. These records can reveal financial information, so protect their privacy even though they are not recovery words.

Saving documentation for reference can help, but an old installer is not automatically safe or usable forever. Do not follow a search advertisement to an unofficial rescue tool. If an alternative application is needed, seek the hardware maker’s documented compatibility guidance where available and verify the alternative project through its own official channels.

Closure does not automatically mean compromise

A discontinued product can present maintenance risk without evidence that its keys have been stolen. Conversely, a separately reported key exposure needs its own response. If a verified notice establishes a specific vulnerability, follow the affected vendor’s published guidance rather than treating every closure as an emergency transfer instruction.

Begin with a recovery rehearsal, not by resetting your only device. Never give a closure-help service your backup or enter it into a website or software form. If you choose new hardware, distinguish replacing the signer from creating a new wallet: restoring existing keys preserves the wallet; a new backup creates a different one.
